What AI Actually Does for Environmental Consulting, and What It Does Not

A skeptical, practical look at where AI tools earn their keep in environmental work, and where they are mostly marketing.

I get asked about AI a lot. Specifically, by environmental consulting firms, restoration programs, and agency staff, who are reading the same headlines as everyone else and trying to figure out whether they need to be doing something. The honest answer is yes, but probably not the thing the headlines are selling you.

I want to write about this from inside the work, because most of what I read on the topic is written either by people building AI products who want you to buy them, or by people who do not actually use AI and are speculating from the outside. I am neither. I am a working data scientist who uses these tools every day, in real client engagements, and I have a fairly clear sense of where they help and where they get in the way.

The places AI is genuinely earning its keep in environmental work, in my experience, are unglamorous. They are not predicting ecological outcomes. They are not replacing field biologists. They are mostly about reducing the time it takes to get from raw inputs to a working draft of something. Coding assistants are the biggest one. I write a lot of pipelines, and a coding assistant cuts the time it takes to write the boilerplate around them by something like half. That is real time, and it is time I get to spend on the parts that actually require judgment. Document parsing is another. If you have ever had to extract structured data from a stack of permit PDFs or scanned monitoring reports, you know how much hand labor that used to be. Modern models do it well enough that it is often worth doing now where it was not worth doing before. Search and synthesis across long technical documents is a third. I can ask a model to find every place a specific genotype is mentioned across a 200 page restoration plan and get a useful answer in under a minute. That is a meaningful change in how I work.

The places AI is not earning its keep, in environmental consulting specifically, are also worth being honest about. Predictive ecological models built on top of generic AI infrastructure are mostly not better than the domain-specific statistical models that biostatisticians have been refining for decades. The marketing wants you to think they are, because the new thing is more exciting. They are not. A well-specified mixed-effects model on a properly structured dataset will outperform a black-box neural network on most real ecological forecasting problems, and it will do it with interpretable parameters that survive peer review. If someone is selling you AI-driven ecological prediction, ask them how it compares to a thoughtfully specified hierarchical model. If they cannot answer, that tells you what you need to know. AI also does not replace fieldwork. Anyone telling you that satellite imagery plus a model can substitute for ground-truthed data is selling you something that will fail the moment a regulator or a peer reviewer looks at it carefully. The remote sensing layer is useful, often genuinely useful, but it is a layer, not a replacement.

The category where I am genuinely conflicted, and where I think the field has not figured it out yet, is automated report writing. The tools can produce a competent first draft of a monitoring report from structured inputs. The drafts are passable. They are also bland, occasionally wrong in subtle ways, and prone to hallucinating citations. I use these tools internally, with heavy human review, and I would not trust them for a regulatory submission without that review. The risk is not that the AI is bad at writing. The risk is that it is good enough that reviewers stop reading carefully, and the subtle errors get through. That is a real risk in our field, where the consequences of a wrong number in a permit document can be a project shut down or a lawsuit.

The practical advice I give clients who ask me where to start is the same every time. Start with the boring stuff. Use AI to compress the time you spend on data ingestion, document parsing, code scaffolding, and internal search. Those are wins, they are real, and they pay for themselves quickly. Be skeptical of anything that promises to replace the analytical or scientific judgment that experienced people bring to your program. That is where the value is, that is where the liability is, and that is the thing you do not want to outsource to a black box. And keep humans in the loop for anything that goes outside your organization, especially anything that goes to a regulator. The cost of a confident, polished, slightly wrong document is much higher than the cost of a clearly hand-written one.

The thing I keep coming back to, after a couple of years of using these tools heavily, is that they have made me a faster scientist but not a different one. The questions are the same. The judgment is the same. The need to actually understand the system you are studying is, if anything, stronger, because it is now easier to produce work that looks good and is wrong. The firms and programs that will use AI well are the ones that already had strong scientific practice, because they have the standards in place to catch the mistakes. The ones that did not are about to produce a lot of very polished bad work. That is the part of the AI story that nobody is putting on the marketing page, and it is the part I think matters most.
